How to Simplify Your Message So That You Get Hired
Successful online entrepreneurs have a clear message that compels people to work with them. Here we'll remove the blocks that are keeping people from hiring you so that you make more money in your online business.
The Secret to Creating Content That Gets You Clients
Ever feel like you're pouring your heart into content, but it’s not landing? You're not alone. One of the biggest mistakes coaches, service providers, and online entrepreneurs make in their content marketing is overcomplicating their message.
You think you're showing off your expertise.
You think you’re demonstrating value.
But what you’re actually doing is confusing your audience.
And a confused audience doesn’t buy.
In this post, I’m breaking down the exact mindset shift you need to simplify your content marketing and start attracting paying clients with ease.
Prefer to listen? You can do that here.
Clarity Is the Key to Conversions
The other day, I was out with my daughters and my granddaughter, Sawyer. She’s four and a half, and when the server came over, she confidently placed her order:
"I'd like a water with lemon in a glass with a lid and a straw, please."
That’s the level of clarity your content needs to have in order to convert readers, listeners and viewers into paying customers.
Your ideal client should read your post, hear your podcast, or watch your video and immediately know:
✅ Who you help
✅ What problem you solve
✅ Why they should care
If your content is filled with jargon, vague statements, or coach-speak that requires people to “decode” what
you’re saying, they’ll scroll right past you.
And I get it. We’ve been (falsely) led to believe that we need to sound smart when we’re speaking online.
But you know what? The smartest person in the room is the one who can simplify complex ideas into something
an 8 year old can understand.
The Content Mistake That’s Costing You Clients
In a recent Content by Design masterclass, I noticed the same issue popping up over and over: coaches and entrepreneurs trying to sound "smarter" in their content—and completely missing the mark.
This happens when you:
🚩 Use big, fancy words that make your message unclear.
🚩 Fill your posts with industry jargon that your ideal client doesn’t understand.
🚩 Talk about your process instead of the results your clients get.
I even tested this by reading a few posts out loud to my husband (who isn’t in the online business world).
Every single time, he said: “I have no idea what they do.”
And if he doesn’t get it, your ideal client won’t either.
Your Audience Is Overwhelmed—Make It Easy for Them
Most people aren’t reading your content with 100% focus.
They’re:
Scrolling between tasks
Unwinding after a long day
Numbing out before bed
Your message needs to grab their attention fast.
Pro Copywriter tip: Your first sentence should immediately tell them if your content is for them or not.
If they have to read three paragraphs to figure it out, they won’t stick around.
In copywriting, we say that the goal of the headline is to get people to read the next line… and then the next.
Every sentence should pull them in, not fill their already overwhelmed brains with useless information.
How to Make Your Content Instantly More Powerful
Here’s a simple exercise to make sure your content is clear:
1️⃣ Pull up your last social media post, blog post, or email.
2️⃣ Read it out loud to someone who isn’t in your industry.
3️⃣ Ask them: "Can you tell me what I do and how I help people?"
If they hesitate, even for a second, you’ve lost them - and you’ll lose your ideal client too.
You need to make it so clear that your ideal client can see themselves in your content.
They should be thinking:
"Oh my God, she’s inside my head. This is exactly what I need."
People Buy Results, Not Your Process
One of the biggest shifts you need to make in your content marketing is this:
❌ Stop talking about HOW you do what you do.
✅ Start talking about what your audience gets from working with you.
Your clients don’t care about your method. They care about the result.
When people read your content, they want to know:
How will this change my life?
What pain does this solve?
Why should I trust you to help me?
If your content is focused on your process instead of their transformation, you’re making them do the work
to figure out if they need you. And they won’t spend time doing that. They’ll move on to someone else who
makes it clear how they can help them.
