Stop Using Content Creation as a Procrastination Tool!

Content creation is an essential part of business, but for many entrepreneurs, it becomes a hidden form of procrastination. If you find yourself endlessly tweaking a blog post, re-recording videos, or postponing a launch because your content “isn’t ready yet,” you’re not alone. This cycle of perfectionism and avoidance can keep you stuck in busywork instead of moving your business forward. In this post, I break down why content creation often masquerades as productivity and how to shift from constant creation to strategic action so that you actually make money in your business!

Are You Stuck in The Content Creation Loop?

Let’s be real: content is essential in online business. But if you’ve got a dozen unfinished blog posts, a podcast episode sitting in drafts, and a “coming soon” lead magnet that’s been coming soon for months… we need to talk.

Because content creation? It’s one of the sneakiest procrastination strategies out there.

It feels productive. It looks good from the outside. But if you're constantly creating and never publishing, never launching, never selling, then you’re stuck.

In this post, I’m pulling back the curtain on why content creation often masquerades as progress, how to know if it’s happening in your business, and what to do when it’s time to shift gears.

Why Content Creation Becomes a Crutch

You’re not lazy. You’re not disorganized. But you might be hiding in content creation, and here’s why.

1. You’re Afraid of Imperfection

You tweak and edit endlessly, convinced your content “isn’t quite there yet.” The truth? Perfectionism is just fear dressed up in a more socially acceptable outfit.

At Podfest, I heard someone say:

“Just reframe perfectionism as ‘I’m a coward,’ and you’ll never fall into it again.”
Ouch. But also… true.

2. You’re Lacking Clarity

If you don’t know what your message is or who you’re speaking to, content creation becomes this big fuzzy cloud of “maybe this will work.” You post to check a box, not to move someone toward a transformation.

That’s not marketing. That’s noise.

3. You’re Avoiding Visibility

Putting your work into the world means being seen. And being seen feels vulnerable. So instead of launching, you stall. You write. You record. You rewrite. You polish. But you don’t hit publish.

4. You’ve Confused Activity with Progress

Content creation feels like you’re doing something. And in a way, you are. But if it’s not being published, promoted, or leading someone toward an offer—it’s busywork, not momentum.

Signs You’re Using Content as a Delay Tactic

If you see yourself in any of these, it might be time to pause and reassess:

  • You’ve rewritten the same blog post or email five times—and still haven’t sent it.

  • You’ve got a backlog of podcasts, videos, or downloads that are “done” but never shared.

  • You keep saying, “Once this new thing is ready, I’ll launch.”

  • You’re creating new offers before validating (or selling!) the ones you’ve already built.

Sound familiar? Let’s shift that.

How to Break the Content Re-Creation Cycle

1. Set Clear Content Goals

Why are you creating this post, this podcast, this email? Is it meant to attract new leads? Warm your list? Sell something?
Know the role of your content so it’s not just… content for content’s sake. Every piece of content needs a job. Get clear on that and then put the content out to work for you!

2. Publish Before It’s Perfect

Say it with me: Done is better than perfect.
Your people don’t want polished. They want real. Show up. Share it. Adjust later.
The sad truth of the matter is that nobody will remember exactly what you said anyway.
They’re going to remember how they felt reading, listening, or viewing it and whether it made a difference for them or not. And that’s what you want to do, right? Make a difference? Hit publish already!

3. Test Before You Build

Stop building out full courses before testing if the demand is there. Sell it first—yes, even if it’s just a scrappy beta. Let your audience co-create it with you. Then refine as you go. I see so many entrepreneurs spending months of their lives perfecting a course that nobody actually wants to buy. Selling before it’s created (at least the first time you offer it) allows you to validate your offer before wasting precious time on something nobody will buy.

4. Systematize Your Output

Use a content calendar. Set deadlines. Create non-negotiables for publishing—even if it’s messy. Especially if it’s messy. I think the big thing we need to do, as entrepreneurs, is redefine what consistency means to you - and then go and do that. I’m not here to tell you that blog posts get written on Mondays and stories get scheduled on Thursdays - that’s up to you. What I do want to invite you to think about is that having a system in place creates more freedom in your business because it allows you to work when you need to work so that you can play when you’re done!

Without a system in place, how will you know you’re done?

5. Focus on What Brings in Revenue

Lead magnets. Nurture sequences. Launch emails. Offer-related content. If it doesn’t lead someone closer to buying, maybe it doesn’t need to be made right now. The biggest thing that sets successful online entrepreneurs apart is that we focus on the IPA’s or income producing activities. We know what the top 10% of our activity is - the stuff that brings money in the door. And.. we know how to delegate or drop the rest - or at least we’re working on it.

Focus on your money making activities for 30 days and you’ll be playing a whole new ballgame in your business.

The Cost of Perpetual Content Creation - A Real-Life Case Study

In this episode of Unjaded, I shared a story about a client who’d been working with me for a year. And I wish I could say she had a thriving business now—but she doesn’t.

She’s created content endlessly: 20+ podcast episodes, multiple lead magnets, several funnels, four courses… and nothing’s published.

She’s stuck in the loop of “just one more tweak.”

But here’s the thing: you can't course-correct a thing that's not in motion. You can’t get better at business if you’re hiding behind the safety of “I’m still working on it.”

Start the damn thing. Launch the lead magnet. Publish the post. Get feedback from course participants in real time.

Then refine - and sell the thing again and again. THIS is how you build a 6 figure online business without breaking your life.

Your Challenge This Week

Pick one piece of content you’ve been hoarding.
Post it. Share it. Use it to drive people toward your next step, whether it’s your email list, your offer, or just a conversation.

Stop editing. Start publishing.

You don’t need more content. You need more action.
